Re: Need a recommendation ....

no, that sounds like a bad idea.
to be clear: you do have a router with four lan ports but you only have
three network cables between the 2nd floor router and the 1st floor. the
three network cables are being used for the three computers.
simplest solution is to get a $15 newtwork switch and a cable and plug the
printer and one of the computers into the switch. then plug the switch into
the wall jack that the computer had previously been connected to. the only
downside here is that you have just introduced another piece of ardware
which means another potential point of failure. still, far cheaper leaving
a network switch turned on all the time than a whole computer. the
alternative solution is to split one of the networks cables to support two
jacks (on each end) as described before. then all three wired computers
plus the wired printers could make it up to the router on the second floor.

The cable internet service comes into the house upstairs into a wireless
router that connects (via Cat 6) the three desktop computers downstairs to
the internet. The printer is also downstairs. I guess I can connect the
second wireless router to one of the Ethernet wall acks downstairs and
then a desktop and the network printer to the that router. That should
also improve the wireless signal. Does that make sense? Will it work?

i bet what you didn't say was that you don't have a spare cable runs
between the first and second floor for the printer. so you do have
enough lan ports in the router for the three wired comptuers and one
wired printer but you just don't have the necessary cable between the
first and second floor to dedicate to the printer. two possible
solutions: 1) rewire one of the cables between the first and second
floor to make a single full duplex/8 wire/4 pair jack into two half
duplex/4 wire/2 pair jacks. 2) use a network switch on the first floor to
plug one of the current computers into along with the printer and then
get a cable to go between the switch and the wall jack.

you are saying that you have a wireless router that has only three
network jacks for the lan? i never heard of any model like that.
something is missing from this story. what model router does he have?

My son has three desktops (wired) and two laptops (wireless) on his
network at home plus a networkable printer (with an Ethernet connection
but no available jack). Due to the lack of network jacks his printer
is connected to one of his desktops and shared which means that desktop
has to be on 24/7. His router is on the second floor and the wireless
signal downstairs is a bit weak.

I am looking for the simplest possible setup that will allow the
printer to be connected to the network - not shared on a desktop plus a
stronger wireless signal downstairs. He has two wireless routers ( one
G and one B). He is willing to add any networking devices required.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx
