Certainly DVD-RW drives have dropped in price to become very affordable.
I lived through the era of early CD-R and CD-RW drives, media, AND, most
importantly, older CD-ROM drives that often had serious difficulty reading a CD
burned on a CD-RW drive. Not pretty. Presumably, the world has rid itself of
the older CD-ROM drives, say 8x and 16x, many of which were the problem. I've
not run into a problem with CD-R media in years, after buying a 4'x4'x4'
"gaylord" container full off off-brand CD-Rs at a bankruptcy auction. Sold off
a lot of them, and advised people to burn them slowly, at the rated 8x speed.
But they even burn reliably at today's 40x and higher speeds. Sold or used all
the best ones, still have some of the cheapies which I use now and then. Only
complaints were when people tried to use some of the media which were scratched
a bit, because the blank platters were scattered loose around the bottom of the
container... Ben Myers

The inherent problem with CD-RW is that the surface can withstand only so many
re-writes. How many? Depends on the quality of the media to some extent.
What happens if a CD-RW fails? Often, you don't know that burning to a CD-RW
has failed until you go to read it. At least some CD burning software provides
an early warning, provided one uses the option to verify upon completion of a CD
burning operation. For the premium price of CD-RW vs CD-R, it just ain't worth
it. Better to use the inexpensive "throwaway" CD-Rs, which also can be
rewritten to a limited extent by smart CD burning software such as Nero, which
allows multi-session... Ben Myers
No argument Ben but if you check historical documents, you'll see the
cd-r's also had problems.
But we are in agreement NOW that cd-r's is economically the way to go.
ps-- I didn't follow this entire thread but is there a reason why the
OP is not using dvd's ?? They are probably more universal nowadays
than cd's or should I say more popular for the moment <g>.
