Quick question: I turn my Dell laptop on/off maybe 5-9 times per day. It
takes awhile to finish booting up (about 1.5-2 minutes).
If I just go into standby rather than shutting down, things boot up much
quicker.
Is there any reason NOT to use standby a few times a day (or all the time?)
Mel
I use standby all the time and do a shutdown / restart only as needed.
I do the same thing as you Journey for both my pc and laptop. Never
shut them down unless I think it's warranted. My pc is on a UPS tho.
The only debate about this is whether we are hurting our power
supplies but after reading long threads, I conclude there is no
definitive answer and I prefer our way <g>.
By power supplies, I think you mean batteries, correct? I usually
have at least two high-capacity batteries for each of my laptops and
sell them within 3 years so I have never run into any problems. I
will always just allow myself to buy another battery than worry about
preserving the battery's life.
One thing I do try to do however is to not deep-discharge my laptop
batteries. A good reason to have a 5 hour battery if you only need 3
hours of battery life is that the battery then would never be
deep-discharged.
Actually I was referring to the power supply for the pc not the
laptop. I have let my laptop battery go down to zero several times
(usu. by accident) but normally I put it on charge when it reaches
about 20% or so capacity left (I get a warning icon pop up usu. at
this point).
