Interesting. Can I use the one from GX270 box? Are they
compatible?
I'm going to have to defer on answering this question, as I don't know
for absolutely certain. I'm inclined to say that both have standard
ATX connectors, but it only takes one "bang!" to disqualify that
theory. If both machines are Dell systems that use the standard ATX
connector, you're good to go. But wait for a person who owns one or
both systems to confirm that!
You probably don't need any more unexpected computer problems at this
point and burning hardware doesn't smell good anyway!
Even if the supplies are physically different, electrical connections
are likely to be the same...so you *could* possibly hang the supply by
the computer and use it temporarily to see if things work right.
Hmm. That's interesting. I disconnected the computer on
Wednesday night and reconnected yesterday late morning.
It takes that long to die?
What gets them is usually the inrush current when first plugged in
after sitting for a while. The filter caps charge up immediately upon
plug in, and many ATX/ATX style supplies immediately start to produce
power.
I've seen more than one power supply that failed upon being plugged
in, probably due to the stress of starting up. Starting up puts the
most possible stress on an electrical device outside of power line
anomalies, so this is when failures usually occur.
Dang, that stinks. :( I hope I didn't mess up my HDD!
As Ben said, sometimes you can. But it's very iffy and you're likely
to run into quite a few hardware and driver issues. Even if you get it
straightened out, you're still looking at an incredible mess that will
be difficult to straighten out if it ever breaks down the road.
As long as no smoke came out of the PCB, there's a fair chance that
your hard drive is alright. You could always hook it up (and I might
recommend that you do) as a secondary drive in another working
computer to grab your data before doing any other tinkering. That way
if you do smoke the drive, you don't lose anything other than the
drive itself.
