FWIW, Dell switched to Flextronics for the Optiplex GX280 motherboards, after
the GX270 fiasco. Flextronics, like Foxconn, is a reasonably well regarded ODM.

1. RIMMs - If the CPU in a Dell RAMBUS system has a front side bus of 533 MHz,
PC1066 RIMMs are the order of the day. RIMMs marked PC800-40 may also work,
but I do not have definitive data here, nor do I have the time to test these
sorts of combinations. Some RAMBUS systems require ECC, some not. For the ones
that do not require ECC, you can still install ECC and the ECC
calculation/checking is ignored.
2. Capacitors - Dell did a recall of motherboards in Optiplex GX270 systems,
because so many of them had blown capacitors. The metal mounting plate for ome
GX270 board I have is marked "Asus" on the bottom. The mouting plates of most
of other Precision 340/350/360/370, Optiplex 240/260, and Dimension
4300/4400/4500/4550/8200/8250/8300/8400 motherboards I've seen are marked "Inte"
with Intel part numbers, which means that Foxconn probably made them, since
Foxconn is Intel's motherboard manufacturer of choice for its branded and OEM
motherboards.
Of all the brands of boards that suffered from blown capacitors, MSI was the
worst, IMHO... Ben Myers

Someone here might know these obscurities.....
1. RIMMs. For 2-3 years Dell used these fast but expensive and rare beasts.
At this point one Ebays and scrounges what one can. Out of the broad swath of
Dim 8100s and 82xxs, plus the equivalent workstations, using PC800 RIMMs, some
use ECC, some don't. I've stuffed a pair of 256s in an under-RAMmed 8200, and
the BIOS didn't miss a beat. It recognized them and nicely stepped them down
to 8 bit. Is this true of all machines? Could you use a pair of 800s in a
533 machine? Are the terminators interchangeable?
2. Capacitors. I've seen only one Dimension (?8250) in agony with bulged and
burst electrolytics, but plenty of 3rd-party mbs, including Asuses, MSIs and
other top brands. I've even seen throwaway Intels. If Dell partied with the
likes of Foxconn during this era, how come they got bit less than others? Have
I just missed the bad runs? Was there a secret replacement program in effect
for any?
