Seriously, I don't understand what you mean by this.
Well, I certainly should know this better, considering that 11 1/2
years of my IT career was on mainfraimes as a programmer or DBA, but
isn't it true that mainframes have 8.8.8.8... character names for
files? Also, jobs, job steps, and programs were all only 8
characters, causing names like PSH0S549 to mean "Program for Sales
History Production S549" rather than something more intelligible.
As of the end of my DBA career, I think DB2 table names had a limit of
18 characters.
IBM sat on its laurels and Watson's "Think" slogan wasn't followed
very closely after the '60's (IMO).
(there is a high degree of error with this opinion, I may be
overlooking something)
