Well put Tom. I can relate to all of your points except the ATM
(have no need) and the convertible. Too hot in Texas most of the year
to enjoy a convertible. Actually I decided if I ever get a Vette and
live where I do now, I'll go for the coupe with removable tops.
To everyone else: Sorry for straying so much off topic.
To both of you -- I'm jealous. I live in Wisconsin, and the winters
here can be very harsh. I also have seasonal depression, and
sometimes all I want to do is survive the winter. I would move south
but all my friends are here.
And my neighbor put their Christmas lights on already!
Journey, I understand your seasonal depression. I went thru the same
thing when I lived and worked in NY in my younger years. Of course
you're welcome to come to Texas but you better be able to handle 96
degrees in the summer where I am.
OK, I'm packing my bags! At least I'd have one friend there.
According to Money Magazine I am living in the best city in the US.
Ha.... obviously winter was not taken into account.
My SAD depression usually starts around early November. It's sent me
to the hospital several times. This year maybe I'll take a road trip
down south for several weeks. I've never been to Myrtle Beach but
maybe I can rent a place down there for a few months.
I've wanted to see Austin Texas -- it's supposed to be a nice city.
Where do you live?
West Houston suburb in Katy, Texas. Katy is growing too fast for me
and I'd like to move about 12 miles west but my boss (wife) doesn't
want to because of her mom and sisters. Funny me saying this as I
grew up for some time in NYC so you'd think I can handle lots of
people.... well I can but that doesn't mean I have to like it! One
of my daughters now goes to college (Univ. of Texas) in Austin (matter
of fact I have to drive there in about 10 hours from now) and she
likes it there but Austin too is growing. Houston doesn't look that
nice and Katy looks nicer but Austin has a lot of "naturally" nice
looking places tho I don't know them all by name yet. Last time I
was in Austin, we went to a restaurant near Lake Travis and it was
pretty over looking the large lake. The cost of living in Texas of
course is a lot less than most of the country but much (not all) of
the salaries are less. I think for retirees, Texas is liked. The
Houston area is much like most major cities.... crime, traffic,
politics, etc... . It sorta reminds me of NYC and that shouldn't
surprise anyone because of the mobility of people going back and
forth. Texas overall does have some nice places to see but if I had
to pick a major city to live in, in Texas, I'd pick Austin because of
it's natural beauty (also being the capital of the state doesn't hurt
because many things are close at hand). It really is a pretty place
overall and the people are friendlier than Houston but the drivers are
not good drivers. Oh yeah, I suppose you might bump into Lance
Armstrong there because he lives in Austin when he's not dating the
Hollywood starlets. It's been years since I've been in Florida but
of course they have a lot of nice looking places, perhaps more of them
than Texas. If you are into boating, in saltwater, I'd pick Florida
tho to be honest I hear Padre Island and Corpus Christie is supposed
to be pretty nice in the south part of the Texas shore but I haven't
been there. In either state, the southern half will endure a much
warmer climate than where you are now. I remember my first time I
ever left NY other than the tri-state area, it was around Thanksgiving
to see my parents in Florida and I couldn't get over the fact that it
was sunny, blue skies and about 80/85 degrees because where I was in
NY, November was always around 50/55 degrees and gloomy looking so I
was very impressed. Now I'm sorta used to it, tho where I am, its
probably 75/80 degrees at that time.
Ok, sorry to be so wordy... guess I got carried away :( and once
again I find myself apologizing to the others. I guess I need to
stay in the dog house for a day to teach me a lesson about being so
OT.
If you are really serious, you can email me (look at the full headers
in case you can't find my email address).
ps-- I don't mean to sound like Texas is better than any where else
so if I gave that impression I don't mean that. Actually I hear
Hawaii is a nice place to live tho home prices are pricey but I'm not
familiar with rents there. I know salaries are low and many there
work 2 jobs (tourism is a big business there of course so many work in
that field or related to it). I'm not sure how good it is to be
retired there as far as the normal cost of daily living.
