Last fall I set up a couple PowerEdge servers for a client. I

they
were 2800s.

The 2800s had USB on the motherboards and could be used with USB
keyboards. However they also had a card in a PCI slot that had
"PS/2"
style keyboard and mouse ports, which made it easy to connect to
the
clients existing PS/2-style KVM switch.

Now I want to do something similar again except with a Dimension
9100. I
want to add a PCI card with PS/2 keyboard and mouse port so I can
use
my
existing KVM switch.

But I can't find any mention of such a PCI card anywhere on the
net
or
on the Dell website (And I don't have access to those 2800
service
tags
to look at the B.O.M.)

Anybody know what I'm talking about ? Or know what the Dell (or
other
3rd party) part number for these PCI cards is ?

Why not just get a cable adapter that lets you connect the PS/2
connectors (keyboard and mouse) to a USB port? We did that recently
and
it works great...

That doesn't work with either of my PS/2 KVM switches.

it requires that you have a keyboard that is both usb and ps/2
compatible.
just because you stick the a ps/2 to usb conenctor on the end dose not
ensure that it will make a keyboard or mouse usb compatible. the
keyboard
and/or mouse has to be able to work when directly connected to the
computer
or it certainly won't work via the kvm. it seems that the oldest and
worst
keyboard and mice in an office end up connected to the servers.

I think you're missing the point. It is the KVM that is plugging into
the computer and a PS/2 to USB converter doesn't work on the cable for
any KVM that I have ever seen.

funny, i was thinking that you were missing the point.
i have been able to successfully use keyboards/mice that have ps/2
connectors, pluged into a ps/2 kvm, and out of the ps/2 kvm and into a
computer's usb port. of course the keyboard and/or mouse has to be ps/2 and
usb compatible. older keyboards/mice that have ps/2 connectors do not work
when plugged into usb ports (on other words the adapter only allows you to
physically connect it, but the keyboard/mouse has to be usb compatible for
it to actually work). if you are trying to say that you have tried this and
it did not work then it sounds like the particular ps/2 kvm you have is not
compatible. there are lots of junky kvm switches out there. hope that is
clear.
