Hi,
I use and like Nero 5. Anyone know if it works with Vista. I'm on the
fence if I should get my next machine with XP or Vista, so I'm checking
compatibility of the programs I like to use.
Thanks.
And (fwiw) be aware that even Nero (OEM) Express 6 has some "known
compatibility issues" with WinXP Home (and maybe Pro) and will throw a
warning saying as much the first time it is used - though it seems to
work
fine.
I've not tried 6 nor 7 with Vista yet......
Hi,
Your reply to the post, "new models quiet"
http://tinyurl.com/2yslbv
got me thinking about an XPS410, tower only from the outlet. I don't
'need' a new machine, let alone an XPS (the Inspirons would do) but I
saw some good XPS410 prices for decent processors, 2MB, dedicated
video, and even one with XP, but I couldn't pull the trigger yet. I
wanted to get some more information about the incompatibility issues
with Vista. I ran Virtual Vista on my work desktop, and wasn't
particularly impressed with anything about it.
I've also been told that the user account is not a true admin
account. I checked this on a friend's Vista machine, and found that I
couldn't navigate to the .mbx or .wab files/folder, for instance. He
did tell me there's a (Microsoft supported) tweak that will allow me
to do this. Makes me wonder what other places I can't got to. I want
full access/visibility, and I don't want any nag screens ('do you want
to do this?'). Way back when, I tried Windows Defender, and couldn't
stand it due to the nag screens.
I do have a retail version of XP SP1 that is no longer being used,
that I could install on a new Vista machine if I didn't like Vista all
that much, but what a chore.
Thanks for the heads up re: Nero
The XPS 410 to which I was referring ("quiet") is a desktop model (same
case/chassis as a Dimension 91XX/92XX model, BTX with a single large and
quiet CPU cooling fan in the middle of the well ventilated case.)
I've not confirmed Eric's point that Nero 7 will work with Vista yet (though
I certainly believe him). It's just that I have yet to reach a comfort level
with the OS to this point, having used it on some 4 different systems now
(the last of which a brand new Lenovo 3000 laptop). So on any of those 4
systems, I've not found a niche to where I've fully installed applications I
would normally install on XP.
I still find Vista to be piggish, cumbersome and unnecessarily irritating
and aggravating to use and navigate. And OH will it attempt to "think for
you" and "nag" you - by all means yes.
I'm bringing in some extra RAM for the notebook in an attempt to leave Vista
(Home Premium) installed on it while improving perceptible performance - we
shall see. What royally ticks me off is that I know I could install Windows
XP on this same system and it would perform like a dream.
I'll stop now before I go off on a Ben Myers-type MS rant.
Stew
