Re: Dell E310 JC474 motherboard USB issue

what about the diagnostic led's... your lights are across the front near the usb connectors.

here is a link to the led meanings and the rest of the service manual.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3100/en/sm/adtshoot.htm#wp1130520

the next step i would do is disconnect everything from the motherboard except the powersupply and memory and processor.
also remove all usb devices and see if the same error.
the keyboard error should not happen under normal circumstances.
then report what happens there.
then remove the memory chips, and boot again and report what happens.
it should give a different error/ diag led pattern.
if it doesn,t then your motherboard is fried.

could also be that the cmos is fried. perhaps try the procedure to reflash the bios if you can boot from a floppy.

i dont think talking to a dell tech is worth it at this point.
they wont say anything that we havnt come up with already.

i also dont think it is worth it for you to replace the motherboard.
i would buy a bare bones system and put some of those parts into a working system. or better yet sell the whole thing on ebay, and get back what you paid...

Can't get into the bios at all. Since there is no keyboard interface,
hitting F2 procuces no result. It starts the self-check process, beeps
twice and reports "keyboard failure". The keyboard is known good, so
that pretty much leaves the USB interface. I'll try again checking the
four LEDs.

Since this unit is out of warranty everything on the Dell website says
we'll have to cough up $49 to talk with a tech. Since my son has not
yet purchased the PC investing $49 in talking to a tech sounded a bit
excessive.
