Re: Dropping Wireless Connection.

Just did some Google research.

I have the LinkSys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter installed. Someone
suggested that there is no need to install this, since XP already provides
the needed adapter. Is there something different about the LinkSys hardware
that needs special software?

I can see other wifi access points--number is increasing. I haven't
changed anything in the building, other than some additional co-ax cable to
extend Comcast to the other side of the house, and that was back in May and
the problems started in the last 2 weeks. Cordless phone is 2 years old,
but it's 5 ghz and not supposed to interfere. Besides, it rarely rings.
Cell phone doesn't ring ofter either.

Curious thing is that Windows Update kills the connection. It has done so
the last 5 time I've tried it in the last two days, the lasest last
evening where the connection was fine from 8-12:30, then I tried Windows
update and the connection went away. (It has gone away at other times
without Windows Update.)

I suppose that the network adapter might be dying, and that some fairly
infrequent command is sent that kills it, and this command is used in
Windows update, or the possibly driver is suceptible to some unusual
command.

In my business, I manage the care and feeding of small office and home
networks,
many of them wireless. A couple of them have had chronic problems with
certain
computers accessing the internet, while others are just fine. Home wifi
can be
a real crapshoot to keep running reliably.

There are a number of things that can interfere with wifi signals. In
addition
to neighbors' equipment, there are coreless phones, cellphones,
microwaves, and
whatever is used inside the walls of a building for construction. Let's
rule
out the last possibility if the problem you are having is only recent.
Have you
changed anything in the building recently? Can you "see" other wifi
access
points nearby? ... Ben Myers

I've confirmed I have the latest LinkSys software (2004 I believe).

Last night it dropped 3 times after starting Microsoft Update, though
not
always at the same place. Gave up and went to bed.

Tonight I tried Microsoft Update again about 15 minutes after turning
the
machine on and the connection dropped almost immediately. I rebooted,
and
the machine has been behaving for the last 90 minutes.

I run PC-Cillin as a virus checker, and regularly run Spybot and
Ad_Aware.
I'm running PSK wirelesss security.

Any thoughts?

Could it be your Internet provider dropping the connection, or if you
use a cable modem maybe something was done to decrease the strength of
your signal.
