So I'm working on this computer (not a Dell) where the network adapters
have all stopped working. They all show up in the Windows XP Home (SP2)
Device Manager under the category "unknown". None of the drivers for these
adapters will load.
I've tried un and reinstalling the drivers to no improvement. Furthermore,
the *entire* Network Adapters device class is missing from the Add/Remove
Hardware wizard.
I suspect it is Windows reinstallation time at this point. Any thoughts as
to how or why such a thing might happen?
William
Can't tell you specifically why it's happened, but I have seen it - though
rarely.
Try re-building/fixing the TCP/IP stack and running a fix for Winsock.dll
before you re-install.
If you'll search the web, you should find some small utilities out there
that will do either.
Beyond that, if you have an extra PCI NIC lying around, throw it in and see
if you get any different result.
There's an outside chance the onboard NIC could be bad.
