OT: An entire device class has disappeared?

So I'm working on this computer (not a Dell) where the network adapters have
all stopped working. They all show up in the Windows XP Home (SP2) Device
Manager under the category "unknown". None of the drivers for these adapters
will load.

I've tried un and reinstalling the drivers to no improvement. Furthermore,
the *entire* Network Adapters device class is missing from the Add/Remove
Hardware wizard.

I suspect it is Windows reinstallation time at this point. Any thoughts as
to how or why such a thing might happen?
