for wan (internet based) access to your home pc you are better off using
logmein.com that was previously suggested.
they offer a free service that is extremely simple to set up and use. for a
fee they add features to the base service such as file transfer.
gotomypc.com is another similar service that is better (faster, deal with
large screen resizing very well) but is a pay only service. both offer very
high security because no ports on your home firewall/router are opened in
order for this service to work. your pc actually calls out to the logmein
or gotomypc web site. when you want to connect you point your web browser
to logmein.com or gotomypc.com and log on to your account and then log on to
your computer.
with vnc there are lots of things to do if you want a secure connection.
knowing the correct ip address is just one. sounds like you use a router at
home a internet provider that has dynamic (changing) ip addressing. you can
use a ddns product like that from no-ip.com to keep updating the current ip
address of your home router on the wan but that is just one part of the
puzzle. next you need to redirect the wan requests that are received by the
router to the particular pc on you lan (note that all of the pcs on your lan
have the same wan ip address). and you need to worry about security. the
free vnc is not secure. people that use vnc over the internet commonly do
so only after first establishing a vpn connection to the lan. that is a
brief summary of the issues, and lots was left out to keep it simple... the
short answer is to use logmein or gotomypc for simple remote access to your
home desktop. once you outgrow those products than look into alternatives
but keep an eye on security.

Another thread dealt with installing Real VNC to connect to other
computers.
I was able to do this on my internal LAN very easily, using the
internal (subnet?) IP address.
Now, I would like to know how I can access a computer using Real VNC
from outside of my private network.
Questions:
- Is there a command that I can access on a PC to determine the
public IP address?
- I have several computers on my private LAN. They all have the same
public IP address. How do I specify which computer I want to connect
to from a Real VNC client PC when I am outside of my personal LAN
connecting from a public place.
For anyone that doesn't know, you can go to whatismyip.com to
determine your public IP address.
I just need to know what value to use when I try to connect from a
public place outside of my LAN
(I may be repeating myself... it's been a long day)
.
