I usually use Remote Desktop to control multiple computers. However,
I have one computer that has Vista Premium on it which doesn't allow
connections to it via remote desktop. This is irritating because even
in XP, the Media Center version (equivalent in many ways to premium)
did allow connections via remote desktop.

Is there a product that someone can recommend that I can use to
connect from XP or Vista Business to a Vista Home Premium system?

I am probably dating myself but a long time ago I used PC Anywhere.
Also I think I have seen a few people post about UltraVNC. Any
direction is helpful and I can take it from there. Thanks.

You might give LogMeIn a try (they have a free version):
https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?lang=en

logmein.com is ok, and they offer a free version, but it is not really for
remote computing across a lan. it is for wan use. for a lan i suggest you
use real vnc. visit vnc.com and check it out. the free version is fine for
lan use and could not be easier to install and use.

Real VNC looks like a good product from the experts of VNC.

I set up the server and the viewer but am having some problems.

When I run the server and put my cursor over the tray icon, it says:

"VNC Server(User):Not accepting connections"

So, I think the problem is on the server side. I did set a password
for the VNC Password Authorization configuration on the server.

On the viewer side, I enter the IP address of the server PC, which I
found by doing a command line IPCONFIG on the server PC.

The viewer PC then brings up a dialog box without a user name (which
is OK, it's the free version) and a password entry field. I enter the
password, click OK and then I get:

"Authentication failure
Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to {IP address that I entered}"

I think the problem is on the server though because of the message
above of it not accepting connections.

I am not very knowledgeable about TCP connections, etc... but I did a
IPCONFIG /ALL on the server PC and under the first grouping of
infornatmion it says:

"Windows IP Configuration
.......
IP Routing Enabled ....... No
WINS Proxy Enabled ..... No"

Otherwise nothing sticks out as being the problem. I wonder if it's
the IP routing setting above and how I can enable it. VNC Server, I
think, only listens on one port ... so now that I think of it, it's
not routed at all -- it just listens on port 5900.

The only other factor I can think of is the security "features" in
Vista. I turned off Windows Defender (I hate it) on both the server
and the client PC, as well as all firewalls, but Vista brings up an
occasional Windows Defender alert even though I turned it off.

Anyway, I think Real VNC is the product to use, thank you for
directing me to it. I will figure it out eventually :-)
