As mentioned - it's not just the tocuhpad -
it's also NOT responding to the plastic left click "panel areas" above
and below the touchpad.
And the properties for those functions have been verified in control
panel -
I'd add that I would have a look in BIOS (ALT+F to set defaults) to be sure
no one's been dinking around in there.
Beyond that, I'd try reloading the synaptics drivers (from the support
site).
If that doesn't cure it, then it's time to disassemble the system and verify
the touch pad cabling before considering total replacement of the pad. It
could be that the pad connector to the system board has become slightly
loose (it may have even disappeared from device manager).
Those are pretty durable systems. The pad (and buttons) could simply be
disabled within Windows.
