Tom, you are missing the point of what I am saying.
Ok, let's say you never typed it and there was no way provided for you to see it (although I have a hard time believing that there is no way provided either on the order web site or in the PC).
We do agree that after the update, the new key is present IN the copy of Vista that has been upgraded, right?
There are "key finder" programs that you run on your PC that display the product key of the PC that they are running on. The one I use most often is the "Magical Jellybean Keyfinder". Version 1.51 supports Vista. Find it here:

Then you will have the product key.
