Re: OT--file problem

Yeah, but you know if I got a new computer today it would take me forever to
get up to speed.

I have added so many tweaks to my current computer.

It seems there is always menu embedded within menu within menu to get to
something.

Really, this newsgroup has been the best customer support.

I might add I also posted this on the XP newsgrouo and the 24-hour newsgroup
but this is where the answer came!! It's nice to have this community of
experienced user. VERY often someone knows something with regards to a
problem.

In fact, many of my best answers have been off-topic posted on this
newsgroup. I appreciate the friendliness and willingness to help give advice
on such topics (eg: we just bought a new digital camera and the information
gleaned on this newsgroup was instrumental in helping us arrive at a
suitable choice)

Good news.

Sometimes the simple solution works. I'm a big believer in not looking
for a zebra

Well, Tom, YOU GET THE GOLD STAR AND THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!

I just thought I'd mention: I fixed the problem.

I went into Windows Explorer.

You go into TOOLS/FOLDER OPTIONS/FILE TYPES.

The DOC was listed on my secondary computer, but not on my primary. I
don't
know why it suddenly disappeared from there.

Anyway, I was able to add a new extension, DOC and associate it with
WORD.
Now everything works -- I get the choice to Open, Save, or Cancel.

I know enough to make a b/u and dink around with the registry -- but
there's no point right now since I don't know what to even look for!!

I'll be trying the Windows Explorer thing. I did a preliminary
looksee and
.doc was not listed as one of the file types on my primary laptop
(.dot
was). I'm going to see if it is on the other computer and if it is
then
look at the settings.

But I was surprised: such a very long long list and no .doc!!

Definitely try the simple approach first. One of the problems with
the
registry editor approach is knowing which key to change. I've
actually
changed the security settings for office on a "by filetype" basis
using
regedit, and I myself don't remember what registry key is involved.
But
I do remember that there were 3 options (from "you can't do
ANYTHING" to
"you CAN do anything"), on a per filetype basis, and changes could
only
be made using regedit .... there was no user friendly way to modify
those settings (however, that was back with Office 2000 and
possibly
Windows 98).

I agree with you Barry. Editing the registry is not for the faint
of
heart. I've done it too, mainly deleting software that didn't
uninstall correctly but I try not to mess with the registry if I
don't
have to.
