My XPS410 was bought with XP MCE and a free upgrade to Vista. When
installing Vista on this system it requires activation.

My Inspiron 6400 bought through the outlet came with Vista Home Premium,
and I've reinstalled Vista on a new drive without any need for Activation.

I also temporarily install Vista Business on the Inspiron 6400 using a
Dell Vista Business DVD, and it also installed (on a new HD) without the
need for activation. and yes it did show it as activated.

Go figure...

This is very strange, just thought of something else, i was also under the
impression that all the copies of Vista were on the same DVD and that you
just chose your particular flavour to match your COA is this not the case
or has Dell just produced flavour specific disks?

I have had two Dells delivered recently from Dell Outlet. A C521 with
Vista Business and a E521 with Vista Home Premium. I had to call support
to get the reinstall DVD for both. I used the Vista Business DVD to
install in a I6000. Vista installed just fine but was in 30-day trial
mode. Activation was, of course, denied without a valid key. The install
was done five times using different procedures with the same 30-day trial
mode result except for one time when it showed three days till reduced
function. So it appears that a Dell Vista reinstall disk cannot be used
to install and validate on any just any Dell computer.

As long as you install vista on a Dell using a Dell DVD (or from the
factory), it will already show it as being activated without having to
actually do it.
Well i knew it was always the case for XP and previous incarnations but
i thought thats what MS was kicking off about and why they bought in
Acvtivation as there was two many peopleout there running OEM copies
for which they did not have a licence

Just set up a Dell system for a friend obviously came with Vista Home
premium but didn't ask to activate, i thought that now all copies even
OEM copies had to be activated, or have dell reverted back to how it
used to be and not require any activation so long as its on a Dell
PC????
