Memory on the new laptops can go to 4GB but for an incredible price

resolution can be anything you want (1920x1200 certainly, probablynot
the Dell 30" screen -- 2560xsomething).
My Inspiron 1200 has video out, which I take it would only copy the
onboard screen to the external monitor.
What jacks to I need on a laptop to drive a randomly good external
monitor?
Suspiciously video names seem to include
S-Video TV-out connector
DVI connector
VGA connector
ExpressCard slot
Video connector (same as VGA connector?)

No, that's not the case. The video out will drive a monitor at the
monitor's native resolution. On most modern laptops, it will allow the
internal laptop screen to also be used, and go into multi-monitor
extended mode so it makes your desktop much larger. For example, I'm
typing this on my M2010 and the external 2407FPW is at 1920x1200 in
extended desktop mode.
When I watch my Get Smart DVD on the 1200, I run the VGA out to an old
17" CRT monitor as well, and both display the original laptop image,
reduced in size on the CRT. Is there something you have to set up to
have them display different spaces on the desktop?
The alt/f8 choices are laptop, crt, or laptop+crt
