Hmmm Can I do this?

I have 2 dells (8250.....8400)
Both came with XP pro.

The 8250 came with SP1 and the 8400 SP2 ( about 2 years apart :-)
)

I wanna reinstall XP pro on the 8250 - can I use the disks from the
8400?
(i.e. already have SP 2 loaded) - If so - which registration key do
I use? I
assume I still use the 8250's?

Use the newest CD. Being Dell's OEM version of XP onto a Dell box, I
would not expect to be asked for a product key.

This is where I'm stupid I guess. I thought Tom or someone told me
that legally the disc is tied to the pc it was purchased with
regardless of how many identical or same brand pc's you have.

Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong :( .

You're fine using the new disk. As long as they are both XP Pro, all
you're doing is installing a version that already has SP2 installed. It
will install fine without asking for a product ID at all.

If it originally had XP Home and you were installing XP Pro, that would
be a legal problem. Wouldn't be a physical problem as it would install
and not need activation, it would just be wrong :)

Ok, gotcha.

And please refresh my memory..... on new dells, is there an option to
skip activation when finishing the OS install the very first time you
turn it on (shame on me for forgeting what I've done on several new
dells) ? And if so, I guess skipping activation will prevent you from
getting updates (legally)?
.
