One word .... broadband. Even a slow DSL connection will reduce that to

That only helps a little... When I got my inlaws a new computer, it
came
with a basic, unpatched copy of MediaCenter circa 2003. It took me 4
hours to patch - not because of the download speed, but because after
every little hotfix I had to reboot, and re-run the updater. Took
something like 30 reboots to get everything updated properly.
I do wish that Microsoft could streamline their update process so that
you
could download everything first, then automate the patch&reboot process
so
you didn't have to sit there for the whole mess.
Which is why I ignore Windows Update and download all my MS updates from
the
MS download center or from the monthly security bulletins. That way, I get
each patch as a self-contained executable that needs no further net
connection to install and can be archived away for future reinstalls.
Sounds GOOD to me !! I too actually try to avoid their updates
because sometimes I'm not sure what they are updating and frankly I
don't like having to trust MS.
Is there any difference getting the updates from the MS download
center vs. from the monthly security bulletins?
None that I know of.
