If the SATA ports are part of an Intel chipset, they are usually supported natively by the BIOS and no drivers are actually necessary (they may be desirable, but they may not be required to install and run).

It's been a while, but my guess is that the original XP Pro CD does not have.
SATA drivers, while the SP2 CD does. Check the chipset of the Gateway in
Device Manager. If it is an Intel chip (likely with an Intel CPU), you can use
a generic Intel-supplied driver, though it may not be too easy. You'll
probably have to unzip the Intel executable with a 7ZIP or Winzip, find the
appropriate XP driver files, extract them and put them on a floppy. Not fun.

It's XP pro, no service pack. I have SP2 on disk, too. I have a new Gateway GM5424 with a Vista Ultimate disk. I'm tired of my echo in the GW group! It would be easy to go the pata route, but I have a 200GB partition to spare.
I haven't found a chip driver that would fit on a floppy:

There is one driver, but when I clicked it from an XP laptop, a warning said it wasn't compatible.
Would a generic Intel driver work?
Would the Vista driver work?
It can't be this complicated!!!

install CD?
Do not install on PATA and clone onto SATA. You will more than likely have
driver problems. If the Windows install CD you have does not have any SATA
drivers to support your hardware, get yourself an external USB floppy drive to
load up the drivers.
FWIW, I had no problem at all installing Dell's XP onto an SATA drive attached
to a Dimension 4700 with an Intel 915 chipset. I used Dell's XP with SP2. The
Intel 915 chipset blurs the distinction between PATA and SATA, so no SATA
drivers are required. Earlier 865 and 875 chipset boards may require SATA
drivers... Ben Myers

I need sata drivers to install XP. Hitachi said I don't need drivers. I

did everyone install XP before Vista arrived?
