I think it's ridiculous that Dell should block me from using the on-
board card just because I gave them more money to purchase a second
card and a second monitor.
It doesn't help that nobody at Dell cared
to notice my order included two monitors but they didn't scratch their
head over how I could use them together on my system.
Seriously, live and learn. In the computer world, stuff like this
happens. It's not too unreasonable that installing a separate,
non-integrated video card might lead to the integrated one not working
(or in some way not working together with _any_ new video card that
one _might_ purchase).
I would place bets that any random add-on card wouldn't work with the
integrated, either because of the integrated automatically being
disabled, or because of incompatability. A greater assumption would
be that in order for a system to have dual-monitor support it would
have to be provided on one video card, or if not that then at least
two video technologies provided by the same company.
Case in point: my old desktop came with a video card that had both an
analog and a digital connection. I was grateful, but didn't assume,
that I could hook up two monitors to it.
I had two monitors from prior systems (a CRT and a 17" flat screen)
and plenty of desk space, so on a whim I bought another ATI video card
to see if it would work with the ATI video card that was already in my
system, to give me support for one or two more monitors.
It was one of those things in which I tried it and no matter what I
did I ran into problems. I was about ready to give up and tried one
more "permutation" of options, and was amazed that I actually got it
to work. I'm actually amazed that even dual monitor support works on
Windoze (I thought such priveledges were reserved to the Mac crowd,
who I would join if that platform ran the software I need).
You didn't mention what model of computer you use, or what your
graphics needs are (what monitors and / or resolutions you desire,
what kinds of uses i.e. games or just office apps, etc.). Maybe if
you provide more details someone could point you to a good add-on
video card that would help you meet your needs.
I don't see how Dell should be expected to know what your needs would
be for a new video card and monitor. Were these even placed with the
same order?
