Yes, but not totally without some intervention.
The PC2-5300 memory is faster, but it won't be seen exactly the same as PC2-4200, it will be seen as the faster memory that it is, with different parameters.
It will (or at least it should) work, but in some cases, by attempting to use "faster" memory, you computer can actually be made to run slower (this happens because PC2-4200 memory might have run "synchronously" with (at the same speed as) your CPU, while the faster memory might be runing faster but "asynchronous" (not at the same speed, with some "pauses" required to get the data transferred between the memory and the CPU).
In some cases, "faster asynchronous" operation is actually slower than "slower synchronous" operation. You can always (well, almost always ..... depends on the BIOS) go into the BIOS and over-ride the parameters programmed into the SPD (serial presence detect) module of the memory modules. But unless you do this, the results of using "faster" memory can be "slower" operation. Not always, but sometimes.
