The problem with new systems and apps is that somebody has to read and

Understanding old code is harder than recoding from scratch ; which is
why old code has layers and layers of stuff that does the same thing.
Some addition was easier to add from scratch than to reuse old code
that wasn't understood completely any longer.
With a system change, you're forced to understand the old code.
I'm not surprised people decline.

Well... I didn't read and wasn't part of the beta / RC process so I'm
not totally informed on the details. Thinking from the viewpoint of a
developer of a Windows program like The Journal from DavidRM Software.
It's a Windows application, and the least I would have done is to
install the betas / RC's on a test machine (probably laptop) and see
what happens. If it doesn't work, then that's a sign that something
needs to be done :-) This seems like "Responsible Developer 101".
Many apps just work on Vista. That one just happened to. As a
developer though, I would want to load the betas and RC's on a laptop
and use my own product on those OS's. Of course I'd read any
documentation about API changes and how they might affect existing
code. I would want a reusable test plan so I could test that the
functions of the program work without any unexpected results, or know
what they are. The test laptop or PC(s) would be a normal and
expected business expense.
I do appreciate the viewpoints. I just don't agree with your and
Ben's opinions that rigorous testing shouldn't be done. As an
individual developer or company providing a computer solution, Vista
testing and compatibility would be high on my priority / project list.
However, now I'm a user, so I think I'll happily retreat into ignorant
bliss and enjoy the software that is running well on my Vista laptop.
