Re: dell dimension L800cxe. Installed 256 MB memory module, got moreOops, also should have asked opinions on useing 2 different sticks--for
speed. Then installed a 2nd 256, same brand, etc, but the computer now
seems slower. Any ideas why, or any other info needed to help me?
Take pity--I'm a newbie
Thanks
example, a 256 & a 64......, or 256 & 128--i've read differing opinions
about this

I'm sure others will jump in here, but I have always read and heard that
you need to install RAM in matching pairs. In other words, install 2
256MB or 2 512MB, etc. The technical guide for my Dell specifically
states that when installing RAM, the pairs should have matching speeds.
If they are not, the speed of the slowest RAM is what the system will
recognize and use. Perhaps the new RAM you added has a slower speed. The
brands do not have to be the same.
Hope that helps.
Harry
Hi Harry, that's what I thought too--that if the pairs don't match,
the slowest one takes over. But this one has 2 exact sticks 256 each, but
the computer is running slower than it did with only one 256. So i guess
it's probably a totally different problem. Thanks for replying
you might think it is nit picking... but with mixed memory the slower speed
doesn't 'take over', but rather the system runs the memory at the highest
common denominator (aka, the maximum speed of the slowest memory module).
but the speed difference shouldn't be noticeable unless you are doing
intense processing. i am guessing, but i suspect that the overall
performance change since adding the memory is because your system is very
low on hard disk space. windows makes a swap file that is related in size
to the amount of installed ram. the more ram, the larger the swap file.
and when you get to under a gig of disk space windows performs horribly
slowly. check it out.
