code 10 error on Samsung drive -- ready to destroy computer

Hi. I have an XPS2 running WinXP, and at some point in the past, my
Samsung CD/RW stopped working. It's existence just isn't recognized by
the system.
I'm not sure when this happened, because I don't use the drive all
that often. But I recently checked device manager to see if the drive
was listed. It is, but there's a yellow ! by it, and the name of the
drive is "samsuog! ce-s/sw!sw-353s!", which seems odd. The error
message in the device properties for the drive says "This device
cannot start. (Code 10)".
I tried uninstalling the drive and letting Windows redetect it, which
it did, but I get the same problem each time. I also tried downloading
the latest drivers on Dell's site, but the .exe files just brings up
some weird dialog titled "SFDNWIN". That dialog has a dropdown which
lists my other DVD drive, but not the Samsung, and so I can't really
do anything with it because the driver or whatever that I downloaded
does not fit with that drive.
problem is not a unique one. However, the only solutions I've beenFrom what I can tell from doing a search here and via google, this
able to find are for other error codes (e.g., code 39), and because
they involve editing the registry, I've been hesitant to try them out
if they don't specifically address code 10 errors.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
