Just recieved my vista u/g on Monday, so pleased with Dell on that one as
I only ordered app., 10 weeks ago. I'm in the UK and it was posted in the
US apparently.
Now then....'do I u/g my pc just now, or do I wait? Hmm. Not too sure
about that part.
Joe.
PS
I use MCE just now.
:)
I had upgrades arrive for my XPS M1710 and also my home built Shuttle MCE
PC. Despite telling myself I'd hold off I have performed a clean install of
Vista on both machines. So far things seem to be running more or less OK but
the UAC is doing my head in.
Pros :
- The Media Center interface seems much improved and slicker to use.
Cons :
- Vista seems to get very worked up about WinRAR 3.62. Right clicking a
WinRAR file to extract the contents does nothing at all. There is no message
or prompt, it just fails to do anything.
- I keep getting warnings about RealVNC, which is one technique I use for
remote controlling my Media Center PC from my laptop. I also use Remote
Desktop and Synergy2 to achieve the same thing in different ways. They work
OK.
- I have not found a way to share the D: drive on my PC without having to
enter login credentials over and over again (following boots, not at every
access attempt|). As that is where I store all my application software it is
quite an irritation when building another machine.
- Stuff has been moved around and renamed, making it a real pain to just get
on and do stuff. I have yet to figure out how to create a new folder when
saving a downloaded file. Using Vista is a much slower experience in this
regard than XP.
- I nearly always want a "Details" view in all my folders but Vista has a
mind of its own and despite trying to set this view Vista keeps "fixing" it.
The "Apply to all folders" button is always greyed out. This is very
frustrating.
- My Canon camera software is not yet Vista ready. Zoombrowser is, but not
EOS Utility or DPP.
Indifferent :
- Aero glass offers zero improvement over XP. There really is no point in
it.
- Live tabs are also needless, as is the rotating window preview - whatever
that is called. No advantage there.
- Office 2003 works just fine - as it should!
Conclusion :
I guess I'll keep it, because I'm probably over the worst of the migration
pain and as I get used to Vista I'll no doubt get faster at navigating round
it. I'm holding off installing my Canon camera software until the last
possible moment, because Canon are behind the curve on their updates and
Lightroom is not yet Vista certified.
But really, unless you use Media Center or get a kick out of "pretty" or
gimmicky interfaces then you may as well stick with XP/MCE.
