Re: OT: Windows Media Center / PVR Experience

Yes, but we were talking about sets that had actual 1920x1080 physical displays. I suspect that almost all of the sets that you refer to and that you saw were actually 720p sets (with displays in the range of 1280x720, or someties 1366x768 (common for LCD displays)) that "downsampled" 1080i signals to the resolution of their display.

It simply makes no sense, at this point (today) for a manufacturer to make a set with a 1920x1080 physical display and then not allow it to display a 1080p signal (either RF (cable/antenna) and/or via DVI/HDMI). Substantially all of the cost is in the display (which in this discussion is 1080), it takes almost nothing more to make a set display at least one type of 1080p signal, and then the manufacturer can call it a 1080p set, which is a significant factor in marketing. I do know that last year (2005-2006) there were some sets that could accept a 1080p antenna/cable signal (which no one is currently broadcasting) but which would not accept a 1080p signal via DVI/HDMI input, and they were marketed as 1080p sets. In my view (and the view of many other people) that is borderline fraud. However, as far as I know, all of those sets were converted during 2006 to models that would handle 1080p through all digital HD inputs.

I'm not aware of any sets that had 1920x1080 displays but did not display any format of 1080p signal from any input of any type, although one of the other posters says that he has such a set (and he well might, but I doubt if any such sets are still made new this year).

Again, we are talking only about sets that have actual discreet-pixel 1920x1080 displays. Keep in mind that by law, all HDTV sets are required to display a picture from all of the approved HDTV signal formats (almost 2 dozen of them). However, for the purpose of this discussion, displaying a high resolution on a low resolution display (even 720p, e.g. 1280x1024) doesn't count.

Regarding "In some cases the store would have the 1080i and 1080p models next to one another and the biggest difference between them was the price" ... the difference between 1080i and 1080p is not great (in fact, in some cases, the difference between 720p and 1080i or 1080p isn't all that great). But when you see something in a store, before you try to evaluate it, you really have to know what kind of signal the store is feeding the sets, and what the transmission technology is (e.g. is it component video (which is analog) or is it DVI or HDMI, which are digital). Lots of times the stores are running 1080p sets with a signal that is 1080i, 720p or even 480p. In any of these cases, no valid comparison can be made.

I still saw a large number of sets that would do 720p and 1080i but not 1080p when I was shopping just a few months ago. In some cases the store would have the 1080i and 1080p models next to one another and the biggest difference between them was the price.
