the beauty of the esata solution is the ability to turn the drive on and off while the system is running. you normally cannot do that with a sata drive connected to a dell motherboard. i've done it with a lot of addin controllers, like promise.

For esata, you shouldn't need a free slot, just a way to run the cable out of the back of the computer. Isn't the eSata connector just the sata connector?
Regardless, USB2 is vastly easier on this machine
