yes i know. i just hate to think what would happen if it were to be unplugged after in use for a while. will it corrupt all the original data?, etc.. i have a lot of stuff recorded, dont want to take any chances. the use of the external drive is not supported.

Plus you can plug an eSATA drive into your SA8300 STB amd increase your storage dramatically!

esata is a slightly different connector than sata.
the beauty of the esata solution is the ability to turn the drive on and off while the system is running. you normally cannot do that with a sata drive connected to a dell motherboard. i've done it with a lot of addin controllers, like promise.

Have you considered a firewire (or USB 20) external drive? Seagate
makes excellent combo external drives.

Here's a link to a 300G one for $169:

I think it's good for most purposes, however probably not for running
Vista as a secondary option.
Or, here is a 500G eSATA one for $275:

If you have a free PCI slot.

For esata, you shouldn't need a free slot, just a way to run the cable out of the back of the computer. Isn't the eSata connector just the sata connector?

Regardless, USB2 is vastly easier on this machine
