I am already quite indebted to the open source and freeware community for all
the useful apps they provide. Because of the efforts of these good people, my
computer environment is much safer and more reliable than if I went out and
bought comparable but far more expensive products. Much of the nice open source
stuff comes from Europe, where there is strong anti-Microsoft sentiment, almost
as strong as the anti-US sentiment for our liberators in Iraq. No surprise.

This (Dirext X 10 on Vista but not XP) is the kind of thing that
really makes me angry, and I am sure that I am not alone. Hopefully,
pressure will make MS release DX10 for XP.
MS is acting more and more like a typical monopoly. If MS had to
compete with other companies for OS market share, or Office apps, I
think they would create better products. Office is a good example of
how well it progressed while it was in competition with Borland and
IBM. Now that the competition is gone, it can release a resource-hog
version, which would require an upgrade in hardware to run well, which
sells more copies of Vista.
I really wonder how Bill Gates can sleep at night and if he has any
remorse at all for this strategy. He's already the richest man in the
world. Oh, but it's for MS stockholders .....
I don't think that there is any way the average individual can boycott
MS or do their part in not supporting the monopoly. It's like AT&T in
the "old days" (relatively old). There was only one phone system
available. For all practical purposes, there is only one OS available
to most people.
A big problem though, is that if action were taken to break up the
monopoly, how do you do that with a computer OS? When the Justice
Department was considering that (or the judge), there was talk of
separating MS into two companies, OS and apps. That would only create
two monopolies instead of one.
(Hmmm.... I wonder if computer manufacturers could install Open Office
for their customers, and encourage the open source community to
develop other apps?)

Think about it. If you owned a company that developed games, what incentive
would you have to being using DX10 as the underlying platform for game
development? Also cutting out completely the market for gamers who are still
running XP.
Yeah, I know that gamers tend to be bleeding edge hell-for-leather types, but

The latest release version of DirectX, DirectX 10 is exclusive to

run less efficiently.
DX10 will be Vista only. This means that once games start requiring DX10,
you'll have to be running Vista, or you won't be able to play the game.
Microsoft is hoping this will force gamers to upgrade to Vista.
Between the performance hit and problems with drivers, I can't see any
gamer seriously thinking about running Vista at this time. Heck, Creative
Labs hasn't said how long it'll be for them to fix their drivers! You
gotta be kidding me here!
Even game developers have not stated when they would start switching to
DX10 since there's no market yet.
So far, the only game announced that will REQUIRE DX10 is Halo2, from
Microsoft's own studio. Yes, that's right. A 3 year old 'doom-style'
shooter game originally released on the first XBox which itself was
basically PC hardware from about 5 years ago. Yet, Microsoft claims that
Halo2 would be impossible without Vista/DX10. Oh, and Microsoft honestly
expects PC gamers to be EXCITED about a 3 year old mediocre shooter.
Hahahaha! Woo! It still makes me laugh.
