What monitors are used on these systems? Are those also the same
model?
Is it possible that Windows is booting up the first time using a
generic
monitor.inf / 'PnP monitor' entry, but once the monitor is recognized
and the refresh rate is set, the display gets lost upon the next
reboot?
Still thinking.
Stew
Stew,
The monitors are E177FPB. I was hoping Dell would contact me today,
but
I've not heard from them. I think they really are clueless as to the
cause of the issue.
This is for the E177FP:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/E177FP/EN/ug/about.htm...
I'd boot one of the systems (after the noted restore) and check both
the
resolution and refresh rates to see if they fall into spec, along with
seeing if the monitor is properly recognized.
Sounds like some kind of sync issue to me.... ?
Stew
I'm very displeased with the knowledge of the two Dell techs I've spoken
with about this issue. The last one kept asking where I got the image? I
could not get the guy to understand that the OS was installed by Dell.-

Guys/Gals,
There is a known issue with the Dell Optiplex 745 and Symantec
Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.
If you search "dell optiplex 745 symantec corporate antivirus black
screen" in Google, one of your top listings will show that it is
common. There is currently no known fix. If you leave symantec out,
the PC boots fine, install it and poof its out.
that substantiates my earlier comment about symentec software polluting
these systems...
reading the other postings this suggestion looks promising:
To address the Optiplex 745 black screen issue with Symantec Corporate 10:
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Symantec Client, Click Configure
Change Startup option to "Symantec Anti Virus Start" This forces the
Symantec Client to start AFTER windows completes it's boot.
Reboot PC
please report back if it works.
