I'd like to replace all Maxtors. A recent trade rag article indicated that
Seagate would curtail all production of Maxtor designed-drives, and paste Maxtor
labels on its own drives for the consumer market. If so, this would be a VERY
sensible business decision by Seagate... Ben Myers

On a side note, if anyone has a 250GB RAID setup in a Dell desktop,.
watch out. The drives are Maxtor hard drives and freuquently die. If
you have a RAID-1 setup then you're usually ok, because if one drive
fails then the other acts as a mirror. However, if you have a RAID-0
setup then it's a bad situation (but I've even seen both drives in a
RAID-1 setup fail at the same time). Usually Maxtor 250GB pairs are
placed in higher-end Dimension 8400's or the XPS "Gen-line" of desktop
gaming systems.
Dell usually replaces their dying Maxtors with another manufacturer,
the most popular being western digital, followed by Seagate (seagates
are usually sent out when a WD dies). Dell *never* replaces a Maxtor
with another Maxtor except in these 250GB RAID cases. And it doesn't
help; many times I'm back out there in 6 months or less.

As others have stated, a failing drive could be the cause of the problem. The
Inspiron 5100-series run very hot and heat is a known killer of hard drives.
Backup any and all critical information as soon as possible. Then download and
run the manufacturer's hard drive diagnostics, which will tell you the condition
of the drive. If the drive is a Toshiba, download and run Hitachi's Drive
Fitness Test instead. Toshiba is THE ONLY hard drive manufacturer that
disrespects owners of its drives and does not provide a free downloadable
extensive hard drive diagnostic. This is the one reason why I will not use
Toshiba drives as replacements for my client's notebooks... Ben Myers
