I have an aging Dell Inspiron 2100 that won't boot. I get the Dell Logo andAbout the password and setup:
F2 option. All that seems to work fine. I tried to boot from a CD-ROM per
Dell's Doc # 147738 (see below). But, whenever I select "BOOT" in the setup
and follow the instructions in the Dell Doc, all I get is a beep with a
message: " All the items in this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If
any items require change, please consult your system supervisor." Well,
it's my PC and I guess that makes me the "supervisor." There is no
supervisor PW in the setup. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. If
there's a hidden supervisor's PW, can someone tell me where to find it?
Haven't used this PC in several years. Think pulling the CMOS battery out
and replacing it might help?
It may help to clear the CMOS settings by yanking the battery and
waiting a few minutes. Yes, minutes.
If that fails, you can try a bios upgrade. It has a tedancy to
overrwrite the whole BIOS (mostly), including pesky passwords. Kind of
a big hammer, but easy enough on the Dell computer.
Every BIOS upgrade I've ever done, has NOT removed/changed any passwords.
