Tried that, thanks Phred..... but still the same.....the DEL key

Maybe the devil is in the detail. Here's the detail for my 4100:
<quoting>
When the blue Dell logo appears, press <Del>.

If you wait too long and the operating system begins to load into
memory, let the system complete the load operation. Then shut down the
computer and try again.
</quoting>

Note that it's not held down from the moment you reboot, you have to
wait for the logo -- and catch it if you can! :-)

what to do?

G'day Gordon,

I have a Dell 4100 (dunno about that 4100d thing of yours :) and the
way to reach its BIOS (IIRC -- it's some time since I tried 8-) is to
hold down 'Del' while rebooting. Note that that key is 'Del' not
'Delete'. And I'm not sure how that would be affected by the state of
NumLock -- but I would guess that entry to the BIOS would precede any
activation of NumLock anyway?

Cheers, Phred.
