I have a Dell 4100 (dunno about that 4100d thing of yours :) and the
way to reach its BIOS (IIRC -- it's some time since I tried 8-) is to
hold down 'Del' while rebooting. Note that that key is 'Del' not
'Delete'. And I'm not sure how that would be affected by the state of
NumLock -- but I would guess that entry to the BIOS would precede any
activation of NumLock anyway?

Did you try the docs site for your machine docs?
If your machine is actually an LX4100D then it's FN-F1.
