Technically, Alienware released their m5700 laptops using ExpressCard
slots before Dell released the E1505, thus being the first to release a
laptop that used this technology. granted, the acquisition of Alienware
by Dell was in progress (which is where Dell is getting some of their
better technology from), but on the release date of the m5700 Alienware
was it's own company.
i haven't seen many companies making ExpressCards yet, but i have
noticed that Verizon now has a cellular internet card on ExpressCard,
and Linksys has an ethernet adapter on it. give it some time, they'll
come; the bandwidth on the PCI Express bus (which runs ExpressCard) is
not only faster than PCI (which is what PCMCIA runs on), but it is
brand new, which gives the promise of more extensive revisions in the
future. the PCI bus is based off of the ISA bus from the 80's, as is
AGP. if you can get a computer that runs on the PCI express standard
instead of PCI, you'll be thoroughly impressed, i think.
I'd love to know one example of Alienware providing 'better' technology to
Dell. With something other than rumor.
Tom
