To some, I'm sure the Apple batteries will *also* be Dell's fault!

Jees, doesn't anyone *read* anymore? ALL THE AFFECTED
BATTERIES WERE MANUFACTURED BY SONY. Sony
supply to Dell, Apple, and I'd be *very* surprised if they didn't to
others as well. It was a series of manufacturing or design defects
by SONY that's caused the problem.

As others have pointed out it was sarcasm, and in case you weren't
aware, one or more Sony spokespersons remarked that the problem
was with the cells but also made comments to the effect that Dell
notebook specific issues exacerbated the problem. In the articles I read the spokesperson declined to provide details due to confidentiality
agreements. However, at/after that time other notebook manufacturers,
in response to questions whether their notebooks would be affected,
commented that they charge their batteries in a different way. So one
way or another, the climate became one in which blame was cast not
only on the Sony cells but also on Dell notebook design/construction.

Such comments, the context, the lack of hard data/details, etc combine
to suggest spin. However, you've probably read that the problem with
the cells is contamination particles which can migrate into a position
where they cause a short, and depending on the nature of the short,
there could be either a catastrophic failure or a non-catastrophic failure.
The environment in which the cells exist is said to affect particle migration.
Factors I've seen mentioned include the arrangement of the cells in the
battery pack (parallel vs series), exposure to shock/vibration (how the
cells and packs are mechanically mounted may play a small role), heat
(partly a function of the notebook design & config), and current flow
during operation and charging (function of config and charging circuitry/
profile). Obviously all notebooks aren't equal in these areas, and for
that matter, it isn't out of the question that some notebooks might be
borderline or beyond spec when it comes to the battery's mechanical,
environmental, and/or electrical environment.

Having raised the possibility of spin as well as the possibility of truth
and by extension combinations of both, I'll leave it to readers to
judge things for themselves. .
