you could change the way windows asks for your password from the welcome
screen view to the classic view. this would give you both a box for both
the username and password... and you can type into the username field to see
what is being registered as your keystrokes.
start-controlpanel-useraccounts-changethewayuserslogonandoff-usewelcomescreen(uncheck)

only occurs when windows log on required. during rejected password entry,
dots representing hidden password characters do appear.

No other observed events suggesting keyboard malfunction. Triple checked
caps lock -is off.
