Re: 2200: Stand by doesn't work any more

Read Dell's warranty and show me where it says Dell is responsible for the
sofware. They warrant the hardware and you are responsible for the
software. You can restore from your backup so no drivers are required.

This whole Dell plan - we'll give you an XP disk but you have to hunt
for the drivers yourself - is insane. The only good news is that
because I didn't install most of the Dell junk that automatically
loads at start-up, my computer now boots in about 20 seconds instead
of 5 minutes....

I'm confused. What "Dell plan". XP was released in 2002. Newer machines
require newer drivers. No major vendor does a better job of providing
their
drivers on their website than Dell. Try to find a driver on the HP site.
Usually you can't.

My computer came with XP Pro installed, along with, apparently,
drivers to make the hardware work. When my HD was replaced, Dell told
me to get the drivers off their web site, including the drivers for
the wireless and wired Ethernet devices.

But my point is that, with all these drivers, would it really be so
hard to make a list: "here are the drivers you need for your
hardware"? Surely they have such a list, because they use it when
they build the machine and ship it out.

More generally, a warranty to fix a machine should include enough
service so that the "fixed" machine works. (If someone "fixed" my car
but told me I had to drive somewhere else before I could use the
tires, I wouldn't call it fixed. When Dell "fixes" my computer, but
tells me I need to go on the Internet to get the software that will
let me go on the Internet, I don't call it fixed.)
