Well he took it back to Staples and they said they would have a tech take a
look at it. They called yesterday to say the printer was BAD, something
about the USB connectors/IO port, and would order him a new one. I feel
vindicated about that, but stupid for not telling him to return it sooner!

Chris thanks, but of course it does not apply to BB purchases :( Anyway,
Ben and you were right on! I installed the card last night, the WinXP
clean install went okay and I got everything back up and running. I then
reinstalled everthing else, including MS XP's 47 Updates, without WGA
Notify.
Last to go was a download of that %#* HP all-in-one printer drivers from
the net. Yikes 250MB for a printer/scanner driver! What's that about?
Anyway, I installed as per HP instructions, printer printed, scanned,
transferred memory card photos, assigned a drive letter to the built-in
USB port/memory card reader. No yellow splats in device manager, reboot,
everything working great! Turn the printer off, with the PC running okay,
turn it back on and printer is not available :( Reboot computer, it will
not shutdown until the printer is physically turned off, same old BS.
Reboot, turn printer on and off, etc. Works when it wants to, but mostly
doesn't. The printer from Hell, what a PIA!
His brother has the same HP model (both Christmas Gifts), so I told him to
borrow his printer and try that, which I bet will work. I told him it
must be a bad printer, so take it back to Staples for a replacement.
Before the Video card problem, I had tried an unistall/reinstall of the
downloaded drivers, a different USB cable and ports, etc... I am at a
loss to fix this and can only conclude it is a BAD PRINTER!
I stopped buying HP products years ago, when I finally took the XP plunge
and my $500 HP corporate scanner was left high and dry with no XP drivers
and no way to get it running on three different Dell XP machines. But, I
discussed that with you, Ben and others ad nauseum in an older thread.
Thanks, Pat

that makes sense. gets you back up and running sooner and let you easily
return the thing if it turns out not to be the culprit.
the price seems reasonable too. newegg wants $100 for it including
shipping. but newegg does have a $30 rebate... the rebate might apply to
your retail purchase too (depending on the bar code)... check it out...

Well, yes. That is typical of most HP inkjet software. I think HPSnip
has fallen
victim to the Microsoft software complexity syndrome. After all, why
do it the
easy way when there is an infinitely complicated solution. Same with
HP
scanner software.
On the other hand, HP laser printer drivers seem to work pretty
flawlessly. Or
maybe it's because I tend to install and use HP lasers with PostScript?

Thanks for all the replies. He didn't want to wait for a net order, so
he's getting an ATI Radeon 9550 256MB AGP8X card at Best Buy for $80. I
also figure if that's not the problem, he can return the card to BB. I
just hope my aborted clean install of XP doesn't have to be redone from
scratch. Formatting........
Yes Ben, take an HP inkjet, add an HP scanner and a built-in memory card
reader and you get one Big HP Mess!
Thanks, Pat
