I have the same problem with heat build up with my 600m, especially
when I use it outdoors in the summer. It got so hot that the system
would cut off access to the auxiliary battery I have in the modular
bay.
What I did was first download a freebe software just recently mentioned
on this list at:
http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html
to monitor temperature among the various components such as the
processor graphics card chip, memory, and hard drive.
The program permits direct control over your internal cooling fan. I
found out that the harddrive was the most difficult source of heat
build up to control in my 600m.
I am now using a homemade laptop tray that has a single fan I removed
from a desktop computer case cooling the underneath side of the laptop.
As Journey suggested an additional fan setting underneath the computer
does really make a difference.

I have had a dell inspiron 6000 for about six
months and have had no problems apart from noticing that it does get
very hot. Subsequently I bought a fan cooling pad to keep the laptop
cool. I have noticed however that the fan cooling pad causes the
vent/fan on the bottom of the computer to become dusty as it seems the
feet of the cooling pad rest directly on this vent.
Do you guys think a cooling pad is necessary with
this dell model or am I ok without one?. Or maybe i should get a better
designed cooling pad?.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
