Re: Zyxel router for Inspiron 1505?

i don't know the zywall 2, but the way it is done in the zywall 5 is this..
assuming that you have the default firewall configuration of 'enable
firewall' under firewall-defaultrule and have 'wan to lan' and 'wan to wan /
zywall' enabled... then go into rule summary and ass some rules that
supercede the default firewall settings. specifically, select 'wan to lan'
from the drop down (one in the rule summary screen) and insert a rule to
forward the ports you wish. be sure to set the 'active' box to 'y', and the
source and destination to 'any' (if that is what you what)... and of course
'apply when you are done.

zyxel is big in europe but is relatively unknown here. they make excellent
small business firewall appliances that are a third of the cost of the big
names (sonicwall, firebox, etc) and include technical support (the others
only come with 30-90 days of support then pay as you go unless you sign an
annual contract). support is stateside but you occasionally get someone
that appears to have had absolutely no training in the product but if you
ask they do escalate you to a knowledgeable person... at least that has been
my experience. i have not used their low end routers or nic but am finding
that some internet service providers are starting to ship zyxel in place of
efficient networks or westel devices...

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 on order and would like to also get a
wireless router. Someone suggested a Zyxel Extreme-MIMO X550 router.
My new notebook will have an Intel 3945 (802.11a/g) card. Are these
two compatible?

Not sure what the draw is on that brand and model. Honestly never heard
of them before, which may or may not mean anything.

Linksys or DLink, my man......proven track record and good
support/documentation.

I bought a Zyxel (Zywall 2) a few weeks back upon the recommendation of
someone here. It is a nice unit for the $. Much better product than
Linksys or D-Link (IMO). Only problem so far is using remote desktop,
but I' ll figure it out soon.

You need to port forward port 3389 for Remote Desktop.

Thanks Tom,

Actually, I tried that. However, I still cannot connect to my PC from
outside of the LAN. It is strange because it was not an issue with my old
Linksys. Also, I cannot connect through the router using PcAnywhere which
I could through the Linksys. I did forward appropriate ports for
PcAnywhere as well. Not sure where to go from here. I sure don't want to
go back to my old Linksys.

Thanks again
