Nope, I upgraded to the 256MB GeForce 6800 Go card. I should be able to
play Oblivion on that sucker, but I'm stuck with Minesweeper.

The fan on my X300 failed and Dell replaced the whole video card. Might
be
a similar problem. Mine did fail diagnostics though.

I noticed the diagnostics did test the fans alright. However, they
don't appear to test the 3D capabilities of the card; just things like
colour correctness, showing correct characters, etc.

Have you tried the 3D video tests in DirectX. It could be a driver issue.
