Re: Upgrading a Latitude CPT 600 GT processor (Worth it?)

Thank you for your assistance.

I have posted on the Dell site, but no responses, I also googled and found
some stuff but no definitive answers, however....

I will have a go at an 850 PIII chip, which, if it works will be fine.

I know it's a really old, even an antique, but it works and is in good
condition, so as an occasional use, WP, web browser/editor, email, and very
occasional image editing, anything more would be a luxury I cannot currently
afford at the moment!

I just picked up an 850MHz mobile CPU for £22 and 512 RAM for £35 so if all
works I will have spent £152, less of course what I get for selling off the
old RAM and CPU

So, in response to the question of "Is it worth the bother"

I will also have spend about 4/5 hours in total hunting for bits, asking for
help, and doing the actual work, that's fine because my time is for me and
that's free, because it's for me!

If it all goes horribly wrong I'll let this NG know!!

Thanks
M

Thanks for the tips, as it will all be DIY and 2nd hand it will all be on
the "cheep". However, I don't want to waste time tracking down CPUs that
wont work.

So my CPU question remains.

Yes, it remains as does google for those interested in pursuing their own
answers.

That system has the same 440BX AGPset as my CPx. The CPt (s and v models)
originally came with only Celerons.

The FSB is listed as 66mhz, probably due to the external clock of the
original Celeron chip.

My answer remains the same: it will likely take up to a PIII 850mhz
speed-step chip and up to 512mb of PC100 SDRAM. That may or may not work
depending on a lot of things, including the BIOS version.

I'm sure if you're really interested, you'll also post over on the dell
latitude community forums: www.support.dell.com , and perform a google
search for a blog or entry of someone who's bothered to upgrade a machine
that is now over 7-8 years old.
