A friend of mine is looking to buy a new computer. He has a VERY old
computer that doesn't work well. He has heard of dual core and wondered if
he should get it. His needs are not huge: internet surfing, email, word
processing, etc. I suggested that he should just get the cheapie Dell (he
will have to decide between desktop and laptop). But I haven't really
looked. I ASSUME there is a significant price difference between dual and
single core machines. I guess I'm wondering if I am giving him bad advice?

The one in the center looks good. $900. It's overpowered for his needs,
but........

You can go much cheaper, with

Down to $300. Though you really need more than 256 MB of RAM for XP. I
see no particular need for a 160GB HDD.
