Is my desktop suppose to be showing up on the the TV? If it is , that has
yet to happen.

Well, blue would be good if your desktop color is blue. What happens if
you try to drag an icon off the left or right side of your screen?

I like your optimism! but unfortuantely all I'm seeing on the TV is a blue
screen.

You're close. Make sure the TV is on and set it for 640x480 or 800x600.
See if when you move your mouse if you can move it off your PC monitor
and on to your TV.

Switching the monitors didn't seem to make a difference but then I
don't think I'm grasping the extend the desktop and making the TV the
primary display. I must be doing something wrong but it's eluding me.
Thanks again for your time.

You know your stuff Tom, it's a an ATI, in display settings it says
Radeon
X300 SE 128 Hypermemory.
Yes there are the 2 monitors one grayed out! OK I've enabled the 2nd
monitor
what screen resolution do I set it at or does it matter. When you say
having
the TV on , you mean the actual TV or the now enabled 2nd monitor
.......right which is the TV ......got it.
thanks again.

Yes, but it would really help if you could tell us your video card.
Odds are high that it is an ATI, so you should have ATI's control
panel too.
When you go into display settings, does it show one monitor or two?
If two, click on the one that is 'grayer' and it will prompt you to
enable it.

Looks like I'm in over my head.
I went out and picked up the cables at radio shack. S video cable
and a "2 way automatic audio/video switcher" .
No luck with getting an image, I'm not sure what "Then go into
display
This may be the problem, I don't know how to extend the desktop forproperties and extend your desktop for the TV. For video to play
best, the TV MUST be the primary display."
tv,I go into control panel/display/settings?

Once it is a monitor, you can play anything you want on it. As I
said, it likely will work best as the primary, but experiment.

Well that sounds worth a try.
the reason I'm considering this is it would beat having to burn
the film, video etc. to a dvd. I'm thinking convenience and
hopefully not too much of a loss in quality. It would be a
temporary situation when I want too watch something on a larger
screen as opposed to this 15"monitor.
Will it be difficult for me to play my avi files right from the
hardrive?
Thanks for all the info.

Well, you can convert from the s-video out to composite (yellow
round) on your TV with something like this:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/svideo-rca.html
For $9.95, it is probably worth a try. I've used Ram before
and they're stuff is first rate.
That said, a 10 year old TV without s-video isn't going to be a
great monitor. It will function for playing recorded TV and be
OK. It will even do a halfway decent job for playing DVDs. It
will not have a readable display for anything Windows related.
All you do is plug it all together and reboot the machine WITH
THE TV ON (yes, I was shouting -- that part is important). Then
go into display properties and extend your desktop for the TV.
For video to play best, the TV MUST be the primary display.

O.K I think I've got all the info.
The pc has a video (round) socket on the back.
The TV does not have the s-video.
and not HDTV.
The TV is a JVC av-27730 from '96.
It has a video input & audio L/mono R
Audio output L R.
I don't know if this makes any sense .

I was wondering if I can plug my TV into the Dimension 5150.
If so how would I go about doing that or can someone suggest a
web site for this info.
Thanks
D.
Which video card?
Does the video card have an s-video out (round connector)
Does the TV have an s-video in?
Is it an HDTV?
If so, does it have VGA, DVI and/or HDMI inputs
Happy to help, just need more info
.
