Re: what Dell laptop should a power programmer buy

So you want a "power" system, but a budget price? Good luck...

In any case, I'd go for a Dell Latitude 620 or 820. The big difference
(AFAIK) is the size of the screen.

I'd go for a T2500 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 100GB 7200 rpm drive. Only
you can decide if you need the DVD burner, what size battery you need,
whether you need a docking station, etc. And what kind of warrany you need.
Personally, I recommend a CompleteCare warranty for as long as you plan on
using the laptop (2 or 3 years?).

You're going to be running much closer to $2000 than $1300, though. But if
you really need the horsepower to do your job, anything else is going to be
compromises and sacrifices. You can cut down on the warranty, but the lose
of a single day's work may eat up any savings. You can cut down on the
processor, memory, or HD, but all those will likely affect your day-to-day
efficiency. You'd be hard pressed to measure and quantify it, though. I'd
step down in processors before anything else. The screen isn't that
important, so long as it's big enough and a high enough resolution for you
to work efficiently. I wouldn't go for anything under SXGA+ (1400x1050). I
wouldn't worry about wide-screen vs. standard ratio; you'll get no real
benefits from either. I prefer a dual screen setup with a 19" CRT or LCD
panel as well, but that's going to push you way beyond your budget. But if
you have a spare 17 or 19" CRT in the office, go for it.

What else... For the OS, get XP Pro if you've got to work in a domain
network environment, or if you need to run IIS. Otherwise you can maybe
save $100 going to Home.
