look in...
start-controlpanel-performanceandmaintenance-administrativetools-eventviewer
to see if there are errors listed on startup.
sounds like the sound driver has a conflict with something else that is
loaded on startup... something that you may have been subsequently
installed...

I got a new D620 a few weeks ago. About a week or so ago, the sound
stopped working. Couldn't see any obvious configuration problems, so I
downloaded the SigmaTel audio driver from Dell's website and the sound
started working again.
I thought everything was fine until I rebooted and noticed that the
sound stopped again. Reinstalled the audio drivers and poof, it works.
Now I'm in a vicious cycle. The sound stops working after every
reboot. Reinstalling the audio drivers fixes it until the next reboot.
According to Device Manager, all devices seem to be working fine.
Any thoughts?
